For most of us eating is an easy and enjoyable experience.

However mealtimes can be challenging for families if a child has difficulties feeding or is a picky eater.

This may be as a result of developmental delay, medical issues or sensory issues around food, particularly for children on the Autism Spectrum.

At GBSS we use a team approach.  Our Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and AHA’s are trained in the evidence based SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach and the Making Sense of Mealtimes Approach.

Staff have also attended advanced training on feeding difficulties for children with Autism.

These approaches integrate sensory, motor, behavioral/learning, medical and nutritional factors

Some children need help to work out what aspect of eating is hard for them and how to overcome it.  Picky eaters can learn to try, tolerate and enjoy a good variety and volume of food.

At GBSS we work with parents to establish goals, to educate and support and to develop strategies for home based learning.

Services can be offered to individual families or as a structured group situation.

Food school is based on a systematic desensitization using a hierarchy of skills and behaviors necessary to progress with eating a variety of textures and flavours and meet nutritional needs.

It teaches how to stretch the child’s food choices, explore foods and have fun.

Groups run on a weekly basis, 60 min sessions, over a 10 week period and include a sensory motor warm up.
